Garrard 401 chassis, early flush strobe version, recently serviced and in full working order, holding speed well on all three settings. Cosmetic marks to the unit as you can see in the photos.

The Garrard 401 is an idler-drive turntable chassis built in England, intended for assembly into a plinth with a separately fitted tonearm. This is an early flush strobe example. The motor is a shaded-pole induction type, magnetically screened and suspended on tensioned springs, driving a diecast aluminium platter via an idler wheel.

Key specifications

  • Motor: Shaded-pole induction type, magnetically screened by heavy cast-iron case, suspended on 6 tensioned springs
  • Platter: Diecast aluminium, 305 mm (12") diameter, approx. 2.5 kg, with anti-static rubber mat
  • Wow: Less than 0.08% RMS
  • Flutter: Less than 0.04% RMS
  • Power Supply: Dual range: 110/115 V and 220/250 V AC, 50 or 60 Hz; ~12 W consumption

Restoration

  • Service carried out by Wilkinsons Hifi as the unit had not been used for some years.
  • Runs well, keeping good speed on all three settings with the fine speed control centred. Stop brake is ineffective. The material looks degraded so the platter takes a while to stop after the turntable is switched off.
