This is the bedplate (base plate) for an SME 3009 Series II tonearm, early variant. The bedplate forms the sliding mounting base allowing the arm to move fore and aft for overhang and tangency adjustment. The graduated markings on the top surface are a distinguishing feature of the Series II bedplate, not present on the later Series II Improved version.
