This is the cueing mechanism dashpot from an SME 3009 Series II (early, non-Improved) tonearm. It uses a hydraulic piston-in-cylinder design damped with silicone fluid, lifting and lowering the arm tube at a controlled descent speed. The early Series II design has a black round lifting piston that rises vertically from the dashpot body, distinct from the later T-bar arrangement used on the Series II Improved.
